Who collects trash in Taylor County towns, and does that limit roll-offs?
Trash collection differs by town in Taylor County. Abilene's own Solid Waste division is the only authorized collector inside Abilene, except short-term construction debris. The regional plan lists Republic Services for Merkel and Buffalo Gap, and we found no published exclusive roll-off franchise in either town.
The 2022–2042 regional solid waste plan from the West Central Texas Council of Governments lists Republic Services as the collection and disposal provider for Merkel and Buffalo Gap. The same plan's October 2021 committee minutes say County Waste Service had just signed a contract with Merkel, so the current Merkel hauler should be confirmed. Tye isn't listed in the plan's table.
What this means for you: outside Abilene, we found no rule that stops a private roll-off. If your address is inside a town limit and you're unsure, we check on the call before the truck leaves. Source: WCTCOG Regional Solid Waste Plan, Vol. II, Table III.H.I, checked Oct 22, 2026.
Where does Taylor County debris go?
Taylor County roll-off loads go to one of two Type 1 landfills on FM 3034 north of Abilene, just over the Jones County line. The regional plan lists Abilene Landfill (TCEQ permit 1469A) and Abilene Environmental Landfill (permit 2325), which took about 180,000 tons each in 2019.
Each load crosses the landfill scale, and that ticket sets your weight charge: $75 per ton over the included tons, charged by the exact pound. How weight is billed.
Abilene residents can also use the City Brush Center on Sandy St and the Environmental Recycling Center on Oak St for paint, oil, batteries and tires. Both are residents-only, and the Brush Center refuses shingles and construction debris. Where to take tires, paint and batteries. Sources: City of Abilene landfill page; WCTCOG plan Table III.C.I.
Can you put a dumpster on a Taylor County road?
Taylor County publishes a right-of-way permit form for work in county road right-of-way, so a dumpster on a county road edge may need county approval. The simplest choice is private ground: your driveway, pad or yard, with the dumpster set on our wood boards.
The county's ROW permit form is the place to start if a road-edge drop is the only option. Unincorporated subdivisions near Abilene, such as Remington Estates, Deer Valley Estates and Cedar Hills Lake, may also have deed restrictions on driveway containers.
The truck needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of clear overhead space. See placement needs by size.
What storms drive cleanups in Taylor County?
Hail and straight-line wind drive most Taylor County storm cleanups. On Easter 2011, softball-size hail hit south Abilene, and large hail ran from Wingate to Novice near the Runnels line. On April 23, 2024, estimated 80 mph winds tipped 20 to 25 rail cars just east of Trent.
Roof and fence debris after a storm is heavy, so most hail jobs use a 20-yard or 30-yard dumpster. See storm debris dumpsters. Sources: NWS San Angelo Easter 2011 storms and April 2024 highlights.
Taylor County dumpster questions
Can I get a cleanout dumpster in Tye or Buffalo Gap?
Cleanout dumpsters go to Taylor County towns and rural addresses outside Abilene city limits, including Tye, Buffalo Gap, Merkel and Tuscola. Inside Abilene, household trash goes through City Solid Waste.
Do you deliver to homes on Dyess Air Force Base?
Base housing and on-base jobs depend on gate access for our truck and driver. Give us the gate, the building and a contact when you book so we can confirm before dispatch.
What size fits a barn or shop cleanout near Lawn or Ovalo?
A barn or shop full of mixed junk usually fits a 20-yard dumpster, which holds about 8 pickup loads and includes 3 tons. Scrap iron and old feed sacks of soil add weight fast, so mention them when you book.
Can the dumpster sit on a caliche or dirt drive?
A dry, firm caliche drive usually holds a roll-off. Soft or wet ground can rut under a loaded box, so pick the firmest level spot and tell us about recent rain.
Is a 40-yard available for a big Taylor County build?
The 40-yard dumpster, about 22 × 7.5 × 8 ft, suits demolitions and new construction across the county. Its included weight and days are set on your quote; concrete and dirt still go in a 10- or 15-yard.
