What size dumpster do you need for a roof tear-off?

A one-layer asphalt roof of about 25 squares weighs about 3 tons, so it fits the 20-yard dumpster and its 3 included tons. Roofs under about 20 squares fit the 15-yard dumpster. Two layers, or roofs over about 25 squares, need the 30-yard dumpster or a second haul.

Typical figures. Your shingle wrapper lists the real bundle weight; architectural shingles often weigh more than 3-tab. Decking, felt and flashing add weight on top of the shingles.

How much do your old shingles weigh?

Your shingles weigh the bundle weight times the bundles per square times the squares. If your shingles weigh 80 lb per bundle and a square takes 3 bundles, one square weighs 240 lb. A 25-square roof is 6,000 lb, which is 3 tons. Use your own bundle weight from the wrapper.

Shingle weight calculator

About 6,000 lb = 3.00 tons. That fits the 3 tons in a 20-yard.

Check the result against the tons included: 2.5 tons in the 15-yard, 3 tons in the 20-yard and 4 tons in the 30-yard. Weight past that costs $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound on the landfill scale ticket. A load 0.4 tons over costs $30, not a full extra ton.

Rain soaks into felt and decking and adds weight. Keep a tarp over an open load if a storm is coming. See how dumpster weight is billed for the full scale-ticket math.

Where should the roofing dumpster sit?

The roofing dumpster should sit as close to the eave you tear off from as the truck can reach, so the crew throws debris straight in. The truck backs in straight and needs about 60 feet of approach and about 23 feet of clear overhead space. Wood boards go under the rails on driveways.

Tell us which side of the house the crew starts on. The driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes before arriving to confirm the spot, and nobody needs to be home if the spot is clear.

Low service wires, tree limbs and parked trailers are the usual blockers. If the truck can't set the dumpster, a $125 dry-run fee applies. Our driveway placement guide shows the space each size needs.

Do you need a debris chute for a roof job?

A debris chute is required by OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.252(a) when material is dropped more than 20 feet to any point outside the building's exterior walls. Most one-story Abilene roofs sit below that height. On taller buildings, the crew must use an enclosed chute or another protected method.

That rule binds the roofing contractor, not the dumpster. Ask your roofer how they plan to get debris from the roof edge into the box. Read 29 CFR 1926.252 on osha.gov (checked Oct 21, 2026).

Keep the load level with the top rim. Shingles piled above the rim can't legally ride on the highway, and an overfilled box triggers a dry-run fee until the extra comes out.

Why do Abilene roofs come off in waves?

Abilene roofs come off in waves because hail storms damage whole neighborhoods at once. On April 24, 2011, hail up to softball size fell across south Abilene from near the mall to the airport and dented roofs, the National Weather Service reported. Storms like that fill roofer calendars for weeks.

After a big storm, book the dumpster as soon as your roofer sets a start date. Booking by 3:00 PM gets next-day delivery. NWS San Angelo storm summary (checked Oct 21, 2026). Our storm debris dumpster page covers fence and siding cleanup too.

What if the tear-off takes longer or the dumpster fills up?

A roof tear-off that runs past 7 days costs $25 for each extra day, and you extend with a phone call. When the dumpster fills before the roof is clear, we haul the full one and drop an empty one, and that swap is billed as a new rental with its own included tons.

Typical example, not a real job: a 28-square, one-layer roof with 80-lb bundles is 6,720 lb, or 3.36 tons. In a 30-yard dumpster that stays under the 4 included tons. In a 20-yard it would be 0.36 tons over, a $27 overage.

Roofing dumpster questions

Can the roofing dumpster be dropped before my crew arrives?

Book by 3:00 PM the day before and the dumpster is delivered the next day between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. For an early crew start, ask for the day before your tear-off so the box is in place when the crew pulls up.

Can underlayment, decking and nails go in with the shingles?

Felt, synthetic underlayment, rotten decking, drip edge and nails all go in the same roofing dumpster. They add weight, so count them when you compare the load to your included tons.

Is a 15-yard dumpster big enough for my roof?

A 15-yard dumpster holds 2.5 tons, which covers about 20 squares of one-layer shingles at 80 lb per bundle. Above that, or with two layers, step up to the 20- or 30-yard dumpster.

Will the scale ticket show the roof weight for my records?

The certified landfill scale ticket is attached to your final invoice. It shows the gross, tare and net weight, which roofers and homeowners can file with job or insurance paperwork.

What if it rains on the open shingles?

Wet felt and decking weigh more on the scale, and you pay for weight over the included tons. Pull a tarp over the open load when rain is in the forecast.
