Placement guide

Where Should the Dumpster Go on Your Property?

A roll-off needs a flat spot the size of the dumpster, a straight path for the truck and open sky above. Here is what each size needs and how your driveway stays protected.

How much driveway space does a dumpster need?

A dumpster needs a flat spot as long and wide as the container, plus room for the truck. The 10-yard dumpster is 12 feet long, the 15-yard is 16 feet, and the 20-, 30- and 40-yard are 22 feet. Every size is 7.5 to 8 feet wide, about one car-width of driveway.

Will a dumpster damage your driveway?

A dumpster can scratch or crack concrete when steel rails sit right on it, so our drivers lay wood boards under the dumpster's rollers and rails on every driveway drop. The boards spread the weight and keep metal off the surface. Concrete poured in the last few weeks is better left clear.

  • Boards go under the rollers and rails on concrete and asphalt.
  • Keep the dumpster off septic tank lids, sprinkler heads and water meter boxes.
  • Avoid soft lawn after rain; a loaded dumpster can sink and rut it.
  • Leave new concrete clear until it has fully cured.

What does the truck need to drop the dumpster?

The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight, level approach and about 23 feet of clear space overhead to tilt its bed and slide the dumpster off. Low power lines, phone lines and tree branches over the drop spot are the most common problems. Mark the spot before delivery day.

  1. Clear the pathMove cars, trailers, boats and trash carts.
  2. Look upCheck for wires and low branches over the spot.
  3. Open gatesUnlock any gate the truck needs to pass.
  4. Mark the spotUse chalk or a cone so the driver sees it.

What happens if the truck can't place the dumpster?

If the truck arrives and can't drop or pick up the dumpster because of parked cars, low-hanging wires or a locked gate, a $125 dry-run fee applies. The same fee applies at pickup if the load is above the top rim. The driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes ahead so you can fix blockages first.

You don't need to be home for delivery if the drop zone is clear. See all fees on the dumpster rental cost guide.

Can a dumpster go on the street?

A dumpster on a public street usually needs the city's approval, and rules differ by town. Inside Abilene, check the City's rules before planning street placement. Coleman's city code bans commercial dumpsters on public streets and sidewalks. A driveway or private lot avoids the question entirely.

Read the Abilene dumpster rules, or pick your town on our service areas page for its local rules.

Living in an HOA? Many HOAs limit how many days a dumpster can sit in a driveway or ask for notice. Check your HOA rules before delivery.

Placement questions

Can the dumpster go on my lawn or in the backyard?

A dumpster can go on firm, level ground the truck can reach in a straight line. Soft or wet lawn can rut under a loaded box, so a driveway or gravel pad is the safer spot.

Which way should the dumpster door face?

Face the swing door toward the side you'll load from, usually the house or garage. Tell the driver on the call-ahead and they'll set it that way.

Can you place the dumpster in a gated community?

A gated community is fine if the truck can get through the gate on delivery and pickup days. Share the gate code or arrange for the gate to be open.

Can the dumpster be moved once it's dropped?

A loaded dumpster can't be dragged to a new spot. Choose the final spot before delivery so the driver sets it once.
