What fits in a 20-yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster fits about 8 pickup loads, enough for most kitchen remodels and many single-layer roofs. Typical 20-yard jobs include a 300 sq ft kitchen gut, a 25-square roof with one layer of shingles, flooring and drywall from a whole floor, or a large household purge.

Typical examples, which vary with how the debris is packed:

  • Kitchen remodel: cabinets, countertops, drywall, flooring and old appliances. See the remodeling dumpster page.
  • Roof tear-off: about 25 squares of one layer, depending on bundle weight.
  • Whole-floor renovation: carpet, pad, trim, doors and drywall.
  • Whole-house decluttering: furniture, boxes and clutter from a full home.

Household cleanouts inside Abilene city limits go through the City's Solid Waste division, which lists short-term construction debris as the only exception to its collection rule. Remodel and roofing debris qualifies. Outside city limits, we deliver 20-yard cleanout dumpsters.

How heavy can a 20-yard dumpster get before overage?

A 20-yard dumpster includes 3 tons, or 6,000 pounds, before overage. Weight over 3 tons is $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound from the landfill scale ticket. A 25-square roof with one layer of 80 lb bundles weighs about 3 tons, right at the limit.

Worked roofing example:

  • 80 lb per bundle × 3 bundles per square = 240 lb per square.
  • 25 squares × 240 lb = 6,000 lb = 3.0 tons.
  • Included in the 20-yard: 3 tons. Overage: $0.

Add a second layer and the same roof weighs about 6 tons. That load needs a 30-yard dumpster plus overage, or two hauls. Read your own bundle weight off the shingle wrapper.

Run your numbers in the dumpster weight guide.

Will a 20-yard dumpster fit in a standard driveway?

A 20-yard dumpster needs a flat spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, which is about the length of a full-size pickup plus a few feet. Most two-car driveways fit it. The truck needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance.

Short driveway? Place the 20-yard dumpster across the front of the garage, or on a firm yard spot away from septic lids and sprinkler heads. Drivers lay wood boards under the rails on concrete and asphalt.

Check sizes against your space in the driveway placement guide.

Is a 20-yard too much, or not enough?

A 20-yard dumpster is too much when the job is one bathroom or one garage; a 15-yard costs less. A 20-yard is not enough for additions, new builds or two-layer roofs, where the 30-yard gives 2 more feet of wall height and 4 tons included.

When you are torn between two sizes for light debris, take the bigger one. A swap is a whole second rental, while unused space costs only the price gap. Compare the 15-yard dumpster and the 30-yard dumpster.

What can't you load into a 20-yard dumpster?

You can't load concrete, dirt, brick or sand into a 20-yard dumpster, because heavy debris is limited to the 10- and 15-yard sizes. Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries are not accepted in any size. Old fridges, AC units, mattresses and tires go in at $50 each.

Kitchen jobs often include a fridge. Tell us when you book so the $50 Freon fee is on your quote. Full details: what can go in a dumpster.

20-yard dumpster questions

Does a 20-yard dumpster fit a whole kitchen remodel?

A 20-yard dumpster fits most kitchen remodels, including cabinets, counters, drywall and flooring. Very large kitchens that also open walls into other rooms may need a swap or a 30-yard.

Can I put tile and plaster in a 20-yard?

Small amounts of tile and plaster mixed with remodel debris are fine, but they are heavy. Watch the 3-ton limit, and keep large loads of tile or masonry for a 10- or 15-yard.

How long is a 20-yard dumpster compared with my car?

The 20-yard dumpster is about 22 feet long, roughly 7 feet longer than a typical mid-size car. It is about as wide as a parked car with its doors closed.

What does a 20-yard overage usually come to?

The overage is $75 per ton over 3 tons, by the pound. A load of 3.4 tons net is 0.4 tons over, or $30. Many 20-yard remodel loads come in under 3 tons.

Can I get a 20-yard swapped mid-project?

Call when the 20-yard is full and we pull it and drop an empty one. The swap is billed as a new standard rental with its own 7 days and 3 tons.
