Which dumpster sizes take concrete and dirt?

Concrete, dirt, brick, sand and rock go only in the 10-yard dumpster, with 2 tons included, or the 15-yard dumpster, with 2.5 tons included. Heavy debris fills no more than halfway up the dumpster walls, because highway weight limits apply to the loaded truck. The 20- and 30-yard dumpsters can't take heavy debris.

How much does a concrete slab weigh?

A 4-inch concrete slab weighs about 50 lb per square foot, using the typical 150 lb per cubic foot for normal-weight concrete. So 80 square feet of 4-inch slab is about 2 tons, the 10-yard dumpster's limit. A 100-square-foot slab is about 2.5 tons, the 15-yard dumpster's limit.

Math: area × thickness in feet × 150 lb ÷ 2,000 = tons. 150 lb per cubic foot is the typical figure for normal-weight concrete; rebar and thicker edges add weight. Weight over the included tons is $75 per ton, by the exact pound.

How much dirt fits in a dumpster?

A cubic yard of dirt typically weighs about 1 to 1.5 tons, and wet clay weighs more. That means a 10-yard dumpster filled halfway, about 5 cubic yards, can carry far more than its 2 included tons. Plan dirt jobs by weight: about 1.5 to 2 cubic yards per 10-yard haul.

Dry soil weighs less than soil after a rain, so dig and load when the ground is dry if you can. Rock, caliche and gravel weigh more than topsoil. When the load goes over the included tons, the extra is $75 per ton, pro-rated by the pound. See how dumpster weight is billed.

What counts as a clean load?

A clean load is one material only: concrete only, dirt only, or brick only, with no trash, wood, plastic or yard waste mixed in. Clean, unmixed loads qualify for special clean-fill pricing, which we quote on the phone. A mixed load is billed at the standard rate for that size.

Pull out wood forms, sod, roots and trash before loading. Keep a second box for mixed debris if the job has both.

Where should a heavy-debris dumpster go?

A heavy-debris dumpster belongs on a paved driveway or firm, dry ground, never on a soft lawn, a septic lid or freshly poured concrete. A loaded 15-yard box with concrete is heavy enough to rut wet soil. Our drivers set wood boards under the rails on concrete and asphalt drives.

Put the dumpster close to the slab you're breaking up so wheelbarrows stay short. Keep a clear path for the wheelbarrow. See dumpster placement and driveway protection for the space each size needs.

Typical example, not a real job: breaking out a 10 × 10 ft, 4-inch patio is about 2.5 tons of concrete. That is one 15-yard dumpster, loaded halfway, right at its included weight.

Concrete and dirt dumpster questions

Why can't concrete go in a 20-yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster full of concrete would weigh far more than a roll-off truck can legally carry on the highway. Keeping heavy debris in the 10- and 15-yard boxes, filled halfway, keeps every load road-legal.

What about concrete with rebar in it?

Mention rebar or wire mesh when you book. We confirm on the call how a reinforced slab is loaded and whether it still gets clean-fill pricing.

Can I mix brick and concrete in one load?

Brick and concrete can ride together in a heavy-debris dumpster, but the load is no longer one material. Ask on the call whether a brick-and-concrete mix still qualifies for clean-fill pricing.

How many hauls will my driveway take?

A 400-square-foot driveway at 4 inches thick is about 10 tons of concrete, about four 15-yard hauls. Give us the length, width and thickness, and we'll count the hauls before the first truck rolls.
