Where to Take Tires, Paint and Batteries in Abilene
These are the items that get pulled out of dumpsters most. Here's where they go instead, and what they cost.

Where do Abilene residents take paint, batteries and chemicals?
Abilene residents take paint, batteries and household chemicals to the City's Environmental Recycling Center at 2209 Oak St. It runs an ongoing household hazardous waste drop-off, open Tuesday to Friday 8 AM to 4 PM and Saturday 8 AM to noon. It is for City residents only, not businesses.
The center takes paint, car and rechargeable batteries, used motor oil and filters, antifreeze, brake and transmission fluid, drain cleaners, aerosols, fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals and solvents. Containers over 1 gallon need to be arranged in advance.

Where do old tires go in Abilene?
Old tires go to the same Environmental Recycling Center on Oak St: $2 for a passenger tire and $5 for a truck tire, City residents only. It won't take tires over 24.5 inches or tires on rims. In a roll-off dumpster, tires are $50 each because the landfill processes them separately.
For one or two tires, the city drop-off costs less. If tires turn up in a big load and you'd rather not sort them, they can ride in the dumpster at $50 each if you tell us when you book.
Dumpster or drop-off: which is right for each item?
Hazardous items must go to a drop-off, because hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries are not allowed in any of our dumpsters. Tires, mattresses and Freon appliances can go either way: $50 each in the dumpster, or a resident drop-off if you qualify.
| Item | Roll-off dumpster | City drop-off (residents) |

Drop-off questions
What do I bring to prove I'm an Abilene resident?
The City's drop-off sites ask for a driver's license and a current City of Abilene utility or municipal services bill. Bring both.
Can a contractor use the Environmental Recycling Center?
The center is for residents only and does not take business or industry waste. Contractors need a licensed disposal option for those materials.
Is dried-out latex paint treated differently?
Our dumpster rules ban wet paint. If you're unsure whether a can is fully dry, take it to the Environmental Recycling Center rather than risk it being pulled from the load.
