7 Reasons Dumpster Bills Go Over the Quote
Almost every surprise on a dumpster bill comes from one of seven charges. Each one is avoidable if you know it's coming.
Why does a dumpster bill end up higher than the quote?
A dumpster bill goes over the quote when something happens that the base price doesn't cover: too much weight, extra days, a blocked delivery, an overfilled load, special items, a swap, or a same-day rush. Every one of these has a set price, so you can plan around all seven before the dumpster arrives.

Which charge costs renters the most?
Weight over the included tons is the charge that grows fastest, because it scales with every pound. A 20-yard dumpster includes 3 tons; a load of 4 tons net adds $75. Roofing, tile and plaster add weight quickly, so check the math before you pick a size.

What does a "dry run" mean, and how do you prevent one?
A dry run is a trip where the truck arrives but can't drop or pick up the dumpster, and it costs $125. The usual causes are a parked car in the way, wires or branches hanging too low, a locked gate, or debris piled above the rim. The driver calls or texts 20 to 30 minutes ahead, which gives you time to clear the spot.

Worked example: the same job, two bills
Two renters each book a 20-yard dumpster for a kitchen and garage job. One adds a mattress, overloads to 3.6 tons and keeps the box 9 days. The other leaves the mattress out, stays at 3 tons and calls for pickup on day 7. The difference is $145.

Is it cheaper to size up than to pay overage?
A bigger size helps with bulky, light debris that won't fit. For heavy debris, a bigger dumpster doesn't help much, because the weight is the limit. Heavy materials also must go in the 10- or 15-yard.
How late can extra charges show up?
The final invoice, with any overage or extra days, is emailed 3 to 5 business days after pickup, with the scale ticket attached.
